Essentially, personal assistance is providing persons with physical disabilities with activities of daily living that, if the person did not have a disability, they could do for themselves. The services are initiated and directed by the consumer and are available on a schedules and per request basis.<\/p>\n<p>Personal assistance may include, but is not limited to, the following:<\/p>\n<p>Personal grooming and hygiene<br \/>\nBathing and washing<br \/>\nTransferring and positioning<br \/>\nMeal preparation<br \/>\nDressing and undressing<br \/>\nToileting and bladder\/bowel care<br \/>\nHousekeeping<br \/>\nSupportive Housing Cluster Units<\/p>\n<p>The Supportive Housing program provides the combination of accessible housing units with twenty-four hour support in a shared living environment.<br \/>\nThe cluster units in Andras Court offer two five-unit clusters for ten individuals who require access to on-site support. The environment is more structured for individuals who have social as well as physical care needs<\/p>\n<p>Life skills and Transitional Living Services are an integrated part of the Support Service Living Unit and Community Outreach programs. Learning and practising the skills necessary to live and participate in the community is a fundamental part of gaining experience and ultimate indepdendence.<\/p>\n<p>These skills may include, but are not limited to, the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Managing persons finances<\/li>\n<li>Using community resources<\/li>\n<li>Maintaining a reasonable state of health<\/li>\n<li>Managing your personal care assistance by being able to asses what assistance you need, arranging assistance in a cooperative way, developing effective relationships with those who assist you, and effectively communicating your needs.<\/li>\n<li>Creating a lifestle which is personally satisfying and respectful of others<br \/>\nUsing community health programs to meet medical or professional needs<\/li>\n<li>Hiring, scheduling and managing Personal Assistants<\/li>\n<li>Managing your personal care assistance by being able to asses what assistance you need, arranging assistance in a cooperative way, developing effective relationships with those who assist you, and effectively communicating your needs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thunder Bay Living Units The Support Service Living Unit program provides a combination of accessible, subsidized housing with twenty-four hour personal assistance service.
