If the page reader cannot speak, your browser may need a voice for this page’s language. You can also use your device’s built-in reading or screen-reader tools. These instructions are for a computer or phone you control; CSINW does not install software on your device.
First checks
- Check your speaker or headphone volume and that this browser tab is not muted.
- Stop any other page or app that is speaking, then press Read page once.
- Refresh the page. If it still fails, try your browser’s own Read Aloud or install a voice below.
Windows 11 or Windows 10 with Microsoft Edge
- Open Start → Settings → Time & language → Language & region.
- Choose Add a language. Add English or French if it is absent. Open that language’s Language options and install available speech or text-to-speech features.
- For additional Windows voices, press Windows + Ctrl + N to open Narrator settings. Under Narrator’s voice, choose Add legacy voices → Add voices, then install the language you need.
- Restart Edge and refresh this page. Choose Read page again.
Edge also has its own reader: press Ctrl + Shift + U, or open the Edge menu and choose Read aloud. Its Voice options let you choose another voice. If an “Online” voice fails, choose an installed device voice.
iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings → Accessibility → Read & Speak (on some versions, Spoken Content).
- Open Voices, choose English or French, and download a voice if prompted.
- Turn on Speak Screen to use the device’s own reading feature. In Safari, swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen to start it.
- Return to Safari, refresh this page, and try the site reader again.
Android
- Open Settings → Accessibility → Text-to-speech output.
- Choose a speech engine and the English or French language. Open Install voice data and install a matching voice.
- Use the Play sample in Android settings to check sound, then reopen the browser and refresh this page.
Mac
- Open Apple menu → System Settings → Accessibility → Read & Speak.
- Open System voice, choose English or French, and download a voice if a download button appears.
- Return to Safari or Chrome, refresh the page, and try again.
For screen-reader users
The site reader is optional. The pages are designed to work directly with your screen reader, including NVDA or Narrator on Windows, VoiceOver on Apple devices, and TalkBack on Android. You do not need to run both readers at once.
